We’ve Got the Sequel to Tsushima – Ghost of Yotei!

There were so many rumors about the sequel of Ghost of Tsushima developed and released by PlayStation’s first-party studio Sucker Punch in 2020. Finally, Sony revealed their work-in-progress in this critically acclaimed franchise during another State of Play event – Ghost of Yotei. Let’s explore in detail about this good-looking game in the setting of ancient Japan.

A New Era is Coming – 300 Years After Tsushima

Ghost of Yotei makes a huge leap 300 years after the events of the original game that happened in the 13th century. It is not a revisit of adventures taken by Jin Sakai, Ghost of Tsushima’s fan-made protagonist, but rather an entirely new adventure that takes players through the wilds of Ezo – a region situated in what currently is called Hokkaido.

Ghost of Yotei

Ezo is a wild place, without the ordered clans of samurai of Tsushima in 1603. There are giant grassy plains, snowy tundra, and dangers of the wildlands. This new setting will definitely deliver new stories and battles for Sucker Punch as they make their way through another bit of Japanese history. Choosing this era is an interesting solution we eagerly want to explore. We could only wish the possible Days Gone 2  gets the same approach if it is developed.

A New Female Protagonist – Atsu

Introducing a new female protagonist such as Atsu could always be a risk. After all, Jin Sakai did become an iconic character for many gamers, and it is always a bit hard to move away from such a well-liked figure. Still, the opportunity to tell “original stories and new legends” through Ghost of Yotei might just create a way for new narratives and innovative gameplay features to shine through that hadn’t been tapped before.

Sure, some fans on Reddit are bound to be skeptical, but if the past work of Sucker Punch is any reasonable argument, Ghost of Yotei could forge its path and give us, players, the experience won’t forget soon.

Next-Gen Visuals and Mechanics

The Ghost of Yotei also promises to make the most of PS5, being Sucker Punch’s first title from scratch for this current-gen console. The graphics are enhanced, offering “huge sightlines” across the game world, a dynamic day-night cycle, and all the more importantly, environmental effects that take immersion to new heights. Check the following trailer that shows the beauty of this breathtaking historic Japanese setting.

Just imagine standing on a ridge, watching the northern lights dance across the night sky as the wind sweeps through realistic, swaying grass. The game won’t only look stunning, but it will also be full of refined gameplay. Sucker Punch has teased better combat mechanics, along with the introduction of firearms to add a new layer to the already rich combat system shown in Ghost of Tsushima.

When is the Release Date of the Ghost of Yotei?

With the 2025 release window still far away, it’s obvious that Ghost of Yotei will be one of many players’ most highly-anticipated titles next year. And with the PS5 Pro still to come, we can only imagine how Sucker Punch will leverage the system’s potential for increased performance.

Closer to the release date for Ghost of Yotei, fans will probably get more trailers, gameplay reveals, and deeper peeks into both the story and mechanics.

Ghost of Yotei is going to be a PS5 exclusive, at least during the first months after the release. And from what has been teased, it looks like one of those journeys that will be well worth waiting and buying a PS5 console.
