Bungie’s Marathon is Alive and Not Free!
Marathon Will Cost No Less Than $ 40!
It seems that rumors about the “death” of Marathon were preliminary. Bungie’s upcoming Marathon reboot has been stirring up hype, and if reports of insiders and gaming journalists are true, that comes with a $ 40 price tag. For the game coming out in 2024, that is quite a bold move considering the dismal launch of Concord, another Sony-backed live-service shooter at a comparable price that completely bombed and was pulled from stores just 2 weeks after it was released. Rumor says that Bungie keeps on working but considering another monetization model for Marathon. The title won’t be free-to-play but will cost $ 40.
According to recent reports, Marathon is shaping up to be quite different from what fans may have initially expected. First revealed in May 2023, the game is a PvP extraction shooter, borrowing from successful titles such as Escape from Tarkov. But rather than following the free-to-play model, Bungie’s sticking to that $ 40 price point – much like the very successful Helldivers 2, another Sony title that managed to thrive with that premium approach. There’s hope Marathon can follow that same trajectory, though the failure of Concord casts a long shadow on GaaS.

The Class System Like in Apex Legends
Gameplay details continue to trickle out. There will be a class system in Marathon, but similar to Apex Legends, only deeper in customization options. Each class will have unique skills, such as double jumps or faster revives. The focus really seems to shift toward customizable weapons and gear. Of course, players will be able to tinker with load-outs and characters with universal implants and buffs gained through progression gameplay.
All these mechanics hint towards a quite strategic approach – how you build your character matters more than pumping the moment-to-moment combat skills. Just like with the rumored Destiny 3 class system, Marathon’s classes are going to be more complex and interesting than in any other hero-based looter shooter.

New Map Details
Regarding maps, early leaks from Reddit that at least two distinct locations will form part of the offering at launch. One takes place on a desolate and abandoned colony planet, while the other is set aboard the Marathon, a large space vessel. These maps are supposed to be more than just a set of backgrounds – each is supposed to provide a dynamic setting full of secrets and dangers.

Rumors About Marathon Release Date
Surely, the scandals and layoffs inside the Bungie team also impact the development of Marathon. Leading specialists and top managers are suspected of different schemes and dragging the development of all the projects. The time will tell how it affected the quality of future games from Bungies.
Still, corrupted by these setbacks, both internal and external, Bungie cautiously hopes for the 2025 release date for Marathon. Many hopes ride on Marathon’s release, coming hot on the heels of recent layoffs and growing pressure from Sony to deliver after a string of missteps.
